I Beg Your Pardon

Grading for the rose garden at Lyndale Park was started rather late and the work in connection with same was much more extensive on account of the character of the material encountered. Altogether about 5,000 yards of loam and gravel were handled by scrapers. The grading was completed before winter set in and the beds are all prepared ready for spring planting. The necessary plants, nearly 3.000 in number, are on hand. All work has been very thoroughly done, so that conditions offered through preparation of grounds, location, exposure, protection and water supply should insure most satisfactory results. Although it is not to be expected that the garden will be at its best before its second or third year of existence, this coming first season will nevertheless indicate what beauty and splendor the future has in store for all lovers of the “Queenly Flower.”

The Rose Garden, as a part of the Lyndale Park gardens, has been a great Success. Considering that it is only in its second year, both the quantity and the quality of roses seen during July and August were a pleasant surprise to many and gratifying to all who saw them. The visitors were many, and they will increase in numbers as the Garden becomes known. The work on this section of Lyndale Park should be continued to a finish this coming season, if possible, and if the plans are carried out the Park will become one of the most useful possessions of the department. Every variety of tree, shrub and other plant which is to be planted in this collection, will be labeled, and the plants will be properly arranged in groups, so that the whole garden, as the Rose Garden is now, will be a field of instruction to all those who are interested in plants. An appropriation of $5,000.00 will about complete this work, including the necessary planting material.
