Atomik Motors

Harold J. Slawik, a lifelong St. Paul resident, built a lasting legacy in the automotive industry. His business, Slawik Motors—later renamed Atomik Motors—operated at 1865 University Avenue before expanding. In the 1950s, he and his wife, Marie, grew the business into Midway Ford, one of the Midwest’s top dealerships. Marie played a key role, becoming the first female Ford dealer in the area.

The couple also invested in real estate, acquiring properties in the Midway area and beyond. In the late 1950s, they planned an enclosed shopping mall in Roseville. Tragically, in 1958, their youngest son, Skipper, died in a boating accident. In his memory, the family established a scholarship fund and donated vehicles from Midway Ford to support St. Paul’s School Safety Patrol Program.

Harold passed away in 1962, but his vision continued. Har-Mar Mall—named after Harold and Marie—opened in 1963. Marie and their son Jerry carried on the business, ensuring Midway Ford’s continued success. In 1977, at Ford’s request, the dealership moved to Roseville, solidifying its regional prominence. The Slawik family’s contributions shaped St. Paul’s automotive industry, with 1865 University Avenue as an early cornerstone of their success.
