The Elwood Hotel Then and Now

The Robin Hotel in 1980 and 2014

The Elwood Hotel was already 15 years old when Allan and Agnes MacDonald bought the place in 1932. the couple ran the hotel as a boarding house for 25 years. The rooms were rented to railroad men, older people and two families from Holland. There were ten rooms upstairs. The main floor had a kitchen, dining room, living room and a room for the piano. In 1956 Father Nolan asked the MacDonalds if they would sell the hotel to Sacred Heart. After the parish moved the building across the street to the northeast corner of Hubbard and 41st, Sacred Heart built their new church where the hotel once stood. The church owned and operated the hotel until 1973 when it was sold to Peggy and Mike Noonan. They changed Elwood’s name to the Robin Hotel. It still serves the community as a rooming house.
