In 1852 the first shingle mill in Hennepin County was built near the mouth of Shingle creek, giving the creek and the neighborhood its name. Workers from the nearby lumber mills began to settle in the area. Theodore Wirth reported in his 1908 annual report that he had already built a dam across Shingle Creek in the park to provide a pond and skating rink. The dam also provided a wonderful little swimming hole for a couple years and that inspired the construction of a modern, cement pool that opened for the summer of 1910. From its opening, the pool offered separate hours for boys and girls swimming. The pool was never open for skinny dipping after dark.
